Ingredients
  

  • 2 teaspoons water
  • 1 teaspoon demerara or granulated sugar
  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Ice
  • 2 ounces bourbon or rye whiskey
  • 1 wide strip orange peel
  • 1 to 2 Luxardo cherries for garnish (optional)

Method
 

  1. In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker, stir together the water, sugar, and bitters until the sugar is mostly dissolved.
  2. Fill the mixing glass with ice, add the bourbon or rye, and stir until well chilled.
  3. Fill a rocks or old-fashioned glass with ice.
  4. Strain the cocktail into the prepared glass.
  5. Twist the orange peel over the drink to release the oils, then add the peel to the glass.
  6. Garnish with cherries if desired.
